Welsh Chapels
The Royal Commission has identified 6,200 chapels in Wales - more than anyone had estimated. By the First World War there was one chapel for every 400 people. Details of all 6,200 are being made available online. You can view descriptions of chapels in every part of Wales through Coflein. In many cases, photographs plans or archive materials are also available.
The Royal Commission embarked on the major recording project ten years ago, with Capel: the Chapels Heritage Society, to photograph and record every Nonconformist chapel in Wales. Study of the chapels was an urgent task; with declining congregations, many were being lost to dereliction or demolition each year.
