Houses and History in the March of Wales: Radnorshire 1400-1800

By R.F. Suggett, 2005.

The evidence for late-medieval building is particularly strong in the March of Wales, especially in the form of the famous cruck-truss. Careful fieldwork by the Royal

Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales has identified several hundred dwellings of medieval origin in Radnorshire. The book defines and dates a range of hall-houses, from peasant halls to halls of lordship status, and traces their development over four hundred years. Special emphasis has been placed on the reconstruction drawings which provide interpretations of buildings that have changed dramatically or have been destroyed since survey. This book will be of permanent value to historians, conservationists and the owners and occupiers of historic houses, not only in Radnorshire but throughout Wales and the March. This lavishly illustrated hardback book presents the results of a major survey of the great and small medieval upland dwellings in Radnorshire, central Wales.
