In publishing an interpretation of the results of its fieldwork, the Royal Commission aims to further knowledge and understanding of the historic environment and keep the public informed about its work. The Royal Commission has published the results of its investigations since 1910 and the first Welsh inventory, covering Montgomeryshire, followed a layout originated by the Victoria History of the Counties of England. This volume was a county survey, laid out by civil parish. Later county inventories were laid out by topic in historical order of monument and reflected the history of a county, making it easier to understand the historical significance of individual monuments. More recently it has been recognised that the function of inventories is best fulfilled by electronic resources, accessible online through Coflein.

During the 1970s the Commission moved towards publishing on a single topic. An all-Wales survey was made with Houses of the Welsh Countryside, where a representative sample of different features of structure, ornament and plan was published. The pan-Wales Chapels Project, now nearing completion, has provided information for a similar study of Welsh chapels.

The current Royal Commission publications policy includes the production of major books, shorter national surveys and thematic volumes, poster plans, interactive web publications and an annual review.

We also publish a newsletter and a range of leaflets about our programmes, services and projects.
